Note:
Slupca Genealogy was originally intended to be an index of Slupca county
(Polish: powiat słupecki).
Thanks to the
Poznan Project ,
my cousin was able to locate some of
our Wawrzynski and Auerbach (also spelled Orbach and Ohrbach) ancestors in
Kalisz county (Polish: powiat kaliski).
It is easier to find all our
people if I index the parishes, I did that with the newest parish. Because I do not want to change the name
of this website nor do I want to start another website for another county, I am
including the Kalisz parishes in this index.
The index has been slightly modified to include a county column. The families I am researching have moved
around quite a bit so I do not know how many parishes in Kalisz county I will be
indexing nor do I know what other parishes in other counties I will indexing. I plan on eventually returning to index
Slupca county. I hope this doesn’t cause
too much confusion.
Slupca County, Poland
is 70 kilometers east of Poznan. At
different times it has been a part of both Prussia and Russia. As boundaries and borders change, or are
renamed, parts of it has been in Poznan Province, Kingdom of Poland, Eastern
Greater Poland, Kalisz District, Konin District, and is currently in
Wielkopolskie Province. Slupca is the
name of a town, parish, and county. The
Family History Library has the parish of Slupca listed as part of Poznan
Province (Poland, Poznan, Slupca).
Because the FHL Films are the microfilms I have indexed, I have used their
classification system.

The vital records were
recorded by both the church and by the civil authorities. There are usually multiple versions of the
same record, which is very handy if one record is difficult to read. It is common to find Civil Registration
records written in multiple books, so there will often be more than one civil
record for the same event. If one Civil
Registration record is blurred or ripped, it is handy to have another to refer
to. When there are multiple Civil
Registration books covering the same time period, often one of those books will
continue on in Polish after the other book has switched to Russian (usually in
1868). Because the Polish is easier to
decipher than the Russian, it is worth the effort to see if any of the other
Civil Registration books is in Polish.
The Roman Catholic
records for Slupca province are written in Latin, Polish, and Russian. It would appear that researching those
records would be overwhelming because of the language barriers. Those language barriers are not as daunting
as they first appear. There are several
books to help the translating process.

help your research.
I have used the
English alphabet instead of the Polish, so there are no accent marks
(diacritics).
I have indexed the
following records:

The microfilmed records end
in the year 1884 and don’t resume again until 1945, which is too late for this
index. The microfilmed records
begin in the year 1562. Many of
these older records are hard to read and most do not use last names. I started this index in 1670, but if
you have ancestors in this parish you may want to look at the older records. There are numerous gaps in the
microfilmed records. Microfilm
1898179 also includes lists of communicants and marriage announcements (they
look like marriage banns), which don’t include much genealogy data but may be
interesting if you have ancestors in this parish.

Many of the microfilmed
Kowalewo records are in poor condition, particularly through the 1820s. I indexed what I could read. The records are solely in Russian
1869-1872, without the names written in Polish in brackets. Those records were not indexed. The microfilmed records end in the
year 1879 and don’t resume again until 1916 (birth records) and 1947 (marriage
and death records), which are too late for this index.
The Konin Branch of the Poland State

Records from the missing years are
written only in Russian cursive.
There are no alternative sources in Latin or Polish for double-checking my work. Because I occasionally have
difficulties differentiating between Russian lowercase letters, the indexes from
these years would be partial, incomplete, or inaccurate. For this reason, I am not indexing
these years at this time.

The Zagorow church records begin in
1593. However, many are written in
heavy ink and make it difficult to read both sides of the page. If your ancestors are from Zagorow
you may want to rent the microfilms that cover the early years and see if you
can find additional information.
